Smoke in the neighborhood near Fogarty Creek and Chester's Thriftway in Lincoln Beach is coming from a prescribed forest burn about 1/2 miles east of Lincoln Beach. Information received from the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) notes that 1000 tons of material will be burned (much of it debris from the recent 2500 Road wildfire), so smoke can be expected most of today and possibly into the night.
Prescribed forest burning is a valuable tool to prepare a logged site for replanting of trees. And by reducing excess fuels, it also lowers the risk of wildfires. Under the Oregon Smoke Management Plan, ODF meteorologists regulate the number and size of burns, based on weather and wind conditions, to minimize smoke intrusion into populated areas.
